The Right and Left Brain

Picture
Jill Bolte Taylor, a brain scientist had a stroke at age 37 and lost her left-brain functionality.  She says, while the two sides of the brain communicate with one and other… "the two hemispheres are completely separate."

“Because they process information differently, each hemisphere thinks about different things, they care about different things and dare I say, they have very different personalities.”

A general understanding of the brain helps us to unlock much of the mystery of our behavior.

Right Brain
The right brain houses the part of us that perceives everything as whole and complete.  It is the part of us that knows that we are a part of the universe, one with everything.

Characteristics of the right brain include:
  • A focus on the present moment - Right here, right now
  • Thinks in pictures
  • Learns kinesthetically through the movement of our body
  • It is where our “deep inner peace circuitry” resides
  • Where we are all interconnected  and we are all one.
  • Where “All is well”
“In this moment we are perfect, we are whole and we are beautiful”
We certainly don’t feel that often enough do we?

Left Brain
Our left brain is the part of our brain that for the most part is responsible for our ability to function on the planet.  It allows us to do all of the things that give us the ability to move through our days.

Characteristics of the left brain include
  • Thinks Linearly
  • Methodical
  • All about the Past and Future
  • Takes the details from the right hemisphere
  • Categorizing what is going on moment to moment
  • Fight or flight
  • Thinks in language
Bolte-Taylor says, “It’s that little voice that says to me, I am, I am,  and as soon as that left hemisphere says to me, I am, I become separate, a single, solid individual separate from the energy flow around me”
A New Understanding
What if we were to simply recognize these two basic personalities and recognize which one is driving you and the people around you, from moment to moment?  What if we are able through this simple recognition to change our default behavior that doesn't serve us, to behavior that resonates with the core of who we are?  It is time to have a model that creates this awareness.
